Hole in the Rock Road to Lake Powel
This gravel and dirt road is approximately 55 miles long and passes some of the most remote and rugged country in the United States. This route provides tremendous views of the Straight Cliffs, the Escalante Canyons and other natural geological formations. Portions of the road are passable only with high clearance and/or 4 wheel drive vehicles. Stops include:
Hell's Backbone
This is a loop drive from Escalante over the Hell's Backbone Road. This was the first automobile route connecting Escalante with Boulder, but was only open in summer due to snow in the higher elevations. The tour takes us from the desert valley to the sub-alpine meadows and pine covered forests of Boulder Mountain. We pass the Pine Creek, Death Hollow and Sand Creek Canyons and see spectacular views of the Grand Staircase-Escalante Monument and beyond. If you are a fishing enthusiast, you could try your luck in the forest streams and lakes. This is an amazing tour that will surely inspire. Lunch is included.
Nine Mile Canyon Auto Tour
This canyon has been described as "a veritable mother lode of rock art sites". The canyon runs for 40 miles and holds hundreds of sites scattered along its length. Our tour will include the famous Hunting Scene for which the canyon is famous. It will amaze you how quickly the time passes on this tour as you move from site to site. You will be looking to "discover" your own site as we move down the road. If ancient cultures are of any interest to you, this tour is a must. Lunch is included.
